The study aimed to measure the asymmetric effects (positive and negative shocks) of global oil prices and money supply on the parallel exchange rate of the Libyan dinar over the period 1987–2024. The study employed the Nonlinear Autoregressive Distributed Lag (NARDL) model and reached several key findings. Most notably, both positive oil price shocks (oil price increases) and negative oil price shocks (oil price decreases) contribute in the long run to a decline in the parallel exchange rate, implying an appreciation of the Libyan dinar. However, the impact of positive shocks exceeds that of negative shocks, indicating the presence of asymmetric effects between periods of rising oil prices and periods of declining prices.
The results further reveal that positive shocks to the money supply (monetary expansion) lead in the long run to a depreciation of the Libyan dinar. In contrast, negative shocks to the money supply (monetary contraction or liquidity-tightening policies) were found to be statistically insignificant. This suggests that reducing the money supply does not necessarily result in a symmetric improvement in the parallel exchange rate, reflecting the limited effectiveness of monetary policy due to weak confidence in the domestic currency and excess domestic liquidity.
